چکیده
Much structural work on NP-complete sets has exploited SAT's d-self-reduci-bility. In this paper we exploit the additional fact that SAT is a d-cylinder to show that NP-complete sets are p-superterse unless P = NP. In fact, every set that is NP-hard under polynomial-time n o(1)-tt reductions is p-superterse unless P = NP. In particular no p-selective set is NP-hard under polynomial-time n o(1)-tt reductions unless P = NP. In addition, no easily countable set is NP-hard under Turing reductions unless P = NP. Self-reducibility does not seem to suuce for our main result: in a relativized world, we construct a d-self-reducible set in NP ? P that is polynomial-time 2-tt reducible to a p-selective set.

Badly Approximable Numbers and Vectors in Cantor-like Sets
We show that a large class of Cantor-like sets of Rd, d ≥ 1, contains uncountably many badly approximable numbers, respectively badly approximable vectors, when d ≥ 2. An analogous result is also proved for subsets of Rd arising in the study of geodesic flows corresponding to (d+1)-dimensional manifolds of constant negative curvature and finite volume, generalizing the set of badly approximable...
متن کاملOn Uniformly Approximable Sidon Sets
Let G be a compact abelian group and let T be the character group of G. Suppose £ is a subset of T. A trigonometric polynomial f on G is said to be an ^-polynomial if its Fourier transform / vanishes off E. The set E is said to be a Sidon set if there is a positive number B such that 2^xeb |/(X)| á-B||/||u for all E-polynomials /; here, ||/||„ = sup{ |/(x)| : xEG}. In this note we shall discuss...

In this paper we study the consequences of the existence of sparse hard sets for diierent complexity classes under certain types of deterministic, randomized and nondeterministic reductions. We show that if an NP-complete set is bounded-truth-table reducible to a set that conjunctively reduces to a sparse set then P = NP. Relatedly, we show that if an NP-complete set is bounded-truth-table redu...
متن کاملExceptional Sets for Universally Polygonally Approximable Functions
In [9], the present authors and Richard O’Malley showed that in order for a function be universally polygonally approximable it is necessary that for each ε > 0, the set of points of non-quasicontinuity be σ − (1− ε) symmetrically porous. The question as to whether that condition is sufficient or not was left open. Here we prove that if a set, E = S∞ n=1 En, such that each Ei is closed and 1-sy...
متن کاملOn the Size of Classes with Weak Membership Properties
It is shown that the following classes have measure 0 in E: the class of P-selective sets, the class of P-multiselective sets, the class of cheatable sets, the class of easily countable sets, the class of easily approximable sets, the class of near-testable sets, the class of nearly near-testable sets, the class of sets that are not P-bi-immune. These are corollaries of a more general result st...
